Our Mission

To be a difference maker in people's lives.

Our Philosophy

People are the Prize

Mechanical safety devices can be very helpful, but nothing is more effective in preventing violence than people. That's why The Shomette Group focuses everything we do on enhancing the ability for people to be difference makers in their school.

With people anything is possible.

People are the prize!

Brief History

For the last seventeen years, The Shomette Group has consulted for mayors, superintendents, police chiefs, and key personnel in major cities with severe truancy issues, chronic violence, and wide-spread safety concerns.

The Shomette Group has worked inside urban, rural, and suburban schools with mild to severe security issues and ranging in size from 8,000 students to over 65,000 students on projects lasting several years. The Shomette Group has equipped school districts and police departments across the nation with advanced threat assessment techniques to quickly and accurately determine if a person poses a threat to themselves or other members of the school community.

Thousands of schools and police departments are using materials and techniques provided by The Shomette Group to identify, assess, and prevent threats of violence.

Don Shomette

As the founder of The Shomette Group and a former police officer, Don has spent a lifetime working with students as well as training and showing others how to be successful in a school environment. Consistently evaluated by those who attend his trainings as one of the best instructors ever, Don challenges, entertains, and instructs school personnel to think of safety in a new and positive way.

As a police officer, Don was a certified general instructor, hostage negotiator, and community policing officer who worked in the highest crime areas in the City of Winchester, Virginia.

Don found his purpose in law enforcement as a School Resource Officer (SRO) and obtained the certification of a Virginia Crime Prevention Specialist (CPS) with a concentration in conducting comprehensive school vulnerability assessments, implementing proactive security strategies, and preventing unwanted behaviors inside schools.

Don has brought his direct experience dealing with the challenges and the day-in-and-day-out life in a public school to his trainings and consultation. He knows what it's like and most importantly, knows how to make it better.

Don was the Executive Director for both the Virginia Association of School Resource Officers and CareTakers, an after-school program for children of color as well as initiated community efforts to mentor youth at the local Juvenile Detention Center. He was a therapeutic foster parent, a Boy Scout Leader, and United States Marine for 12 years with the distinction of being an honor graduate from Marine Corps Recruit Training, Infantry Training School, Non-Commissioned Officer School, and Officer Candidate School.
